When new customers walk into Heather Lane Pottery, owner Susan Hathaway always offers a tour of the working studio. She points out the seasonal designs in the front room, the colorful garden stakes and planters in the Garden Room, and the Lake Michigan-inspired pieces in the Cottage Room.

But, it is the back room that she loves for people to see. That's where she works with a small team of artisans transforming ordinary clay into extraordinary pottery.

The pottery enterprise started almost 20 years ago when two friends-a painter and a potter, formed Heather Lane Pottery, named for the street on which their tiny studio was located. The young mothers sold their wares at art shows around Michigan. As demand for the pottery grew, so did the number of artists. Hathaway, a former teacher and mother of two, was the first to join the creative team of women. "I'd always loved to work with my hands, whether it be baking bread, sewing or gardening," she said.
In addition to this, she also had a fine eye for quality. What began as a primitive look began to evolve into more elaborate designs. Hathaway took over Heather Lane in 2003, and eventually moved the growing studio to Ada, just east of Grand Rapids. The new studio fits right in as it is situated in the heart of a historic village of galleries, unique shops and restaurants. If you have any questions about Heather Lane Pottery or our work, take a look at our FAQ Page, or give us a call at (616) 682-0730 or (877) 464-8370
